"The importance of quality healthcare in our community cannot be understated.  CEPCO is dedicated to providing the same care and attention to the medical community as we do with all new and existing businesses."

UBC Department of Family Practice Residency Program - Chilliwack

The Chilliwack program was established to meet the training needs of physicians considering practice in the mid-sized Canadian city. The city of Chilliwack, the hospital and the medical staff constitute an ideal mix for this program. In fact, the Fraser Valley communities of Abbotsford, Mission, Maple Ridge and Hope have also become participants in this training setting.

Our intent is:

  • To foster independence with adequate support from dedicated preceptors. To foster collegiality.
  • To ensure a healthy focus on evidence-based medicine and to ensure our residents have the training and tolls for this.
  • To have a strong focus in emergency room medicine.
  • To train residents in the community and in community practices.
  • To train residents in a community hospital, where family physicians are respected and integral to its function.
  • To ensure that academic half-days, while offering a core academic program, are resident-based and resident-driven.
  • To ensure that any resident graduating from our program will have the skills, knowledge, aptitude and attitude to practice in an urban, regional, rural or isolated practice.
Chilliwack is ideally situated to take advantage of the city of Vancouver, yet enjoys the pleasures of rural medicine and allows those residents interested to learn of First Nations culture and the unique challenge of delivering medical care to that community.

MISSION
The Mission of the Chilliwack site of the UBC Department of Family Practice Residency Program is the education of family practice residents in a community-based program through mentoring and a collegial and respectful training program that will equip residents with a "toolkit" of skills to embrace the breadth and depth of family medicine.

VISION
The Vision of the Chilliwack site of the UBC Department of Family Practice Residency Program is that family physicians trained here will be retained in the Canadian health care system, capable of working in rural and isolated settings. The physicians who train here will practice evidence-based medicine and have strong critical-appraisal skills. They will be collegial and ethical and will have knowledge of the i mportance of self-care. We will train physicians who have an understanding of social, political and economic realities of medicine enabling them to be active in the administration of the profession and the health care system.
